German Literary Studies

Abstract

«German Literary Studies» is a minor study programme offered by the Department of German, which includes German Mediaeval Studies and Modern German Literature. Its objective is to provide a broad-ranging education in literature, which is a general requirement for work as a teacher of literature or in the media. An analytical approach to working with texts is fundamental to most jobs in today's information society, which means that the skills students acquire in this minor programme are useful in many professional fields. The programme is divided into one compulsory module and one elective module worth 15 ECTS credits each.

    Profile of the study programme

The programme «German Literary Studies» investigates German literature from the Middle Ages to the present in the two disciplines of German Mediaeval Studies and Modern German Literature. In German Mediaeval Studies, students explore German literature from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, whilst Modern German Literature is devoted to literary communication processes in German from the Humanist and Reformation period to the present day. The aim is to teach students the techniques and methods of both disciplines to enable them to develop their own literary judgement and undertake their first independent research. One specific feature of the minor programme «German Literary Studies» at the University of Fribourg is that, firstly, students study both disciplines in one broad-ranging, compulsory module and, secondly, they are able to determine their own study profile by choosing one elective module. Further distinctive aspects of the programme are the close cooperation with comparative study, but also the opportunity for exploring various types of media and for research into questions of poetry and literary theory.

    Learning outcomes
The primary goal of the minor programme «German Literary Studies» is to teach students to develop their own critical judgement of historical and current developments in literature. They learn the fundamentals of literary history, which are crucial to work in the cultural sector. The courses also address fundamental theoretical concepts of literary study.
