Sociology of Social Problems
Abstract
The master programme «Sociology of Social Problems» provides specialised and in-depth knowledge of social phenomena, institutions, structures, processes, practices, and their transformation. It combines sociological theories and empirical social research with the analysis of diverse topics. The programme focuses on the two core themes of «social inequalities» and «social problems,» as well as how society addresses these problems through various mechanisms of welfare production. Corresponding measures, for example, by the welfare state, can lead to systematic privileging or disadvantage, but can also reduce inequalities. In addition to the welfare state, other actors and institutions, such as the labor market, civil society, the family, and the private sphere, are also included in the analysis. Social policies and social work perspectives are included with regards to measures at the local, national, and global/international levels for the prevention or management of social problems.
